North Charleston, SC, January 28, 2016
Contract Construction, North Charleston Fire Department, City Council, and Mayor Keith Summey formally opened the city’s largest fire station with a ribbon cutting on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at 4:30 pm. The ribbon cutting ceremony was held at 2800 Carner Avenue, the corner of Carner & Clements Avenue.
The 18,000 sq ft, two-story fire station houses three fire companies and combines two formerly separate stations, Fire Station 2 (previously on the former navy base) and Fire Station 8 (previously at the corner of Carner Avenue and Meeting Street Road). Housing two engines and one aerial apparatus, the new station is designated as Fire Station 2. The site for the new station sits adjacent to a future city park near Military Magnet Academy.
Fire Station 2 includes five bays for active and reserve apparatus, a training facility, offices for the city’s arson investigators, and crew living quarters. The fire station also includes the city’s first fire slide for quick access to the ground level from crew sleeping quarters.
